Paneer Butter Masala: A Classic Indian Vegetarian Dish Recipe
Paneer Butter Masala, also known as Paneer Makhani, is a popular vegetarian dish from India. It is loved for its rich and creamy sauce, similar to that of butter chicken. This dish is a staple in Indian cuisine and has gained popularity in the West as well. It combines paneer, a type of Indian cheese, with a flavourful tomato-based sauce.
- 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
- 200 grams paneer
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 teaspoon ginger paste
- 5 teaspoons garlic paste
- 1 capsicum, diced
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 1 teaspoon ghee
- 5 teaspoons asafoetida (hing) powder
- 1 teaspoon cardamom
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1 teaspoon chilli powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 500 grams natural (plain) yoghurt

- Frying pan
- Sauté pan
- Bowl
- Spoon for stirring
Procedure
- Fry the paneer in ghee or oil until golden brown. Set aside in a bowl.
- Sauté the onion in oil with garlic and ginger paste until golden brown.
- Add the diced capsicum and tomatoes to the sautéed onions.
- In a separate pan, combine ghee, hing, cardamom, turmeric, garam masala, chilli powder, lemon juice, and cumin.
- Fry this mixture for two minutes and then add the yoghurt.
- Cook on medium heat for five minutes while stirring occasionally.
- Add the sautéed onions, capsicum, tomatoes, and fried paneer to the yoghurt mixture.
- Cook on low heat for fifteen minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Serve hot with rotis or naan and rice.
