Mango And Yellow Split Pea Curry: A Healthy Vegetarian Recipe From South India

Mango Dal, also known as Amchur Dal, is a delightful vegetarian dish from Southern India. It is popular among those who prefer a meat-free diet. This curry combines the tangy flavour of mango with the earthy taste of yellow split peas. It is a nutritious and satisfying meal that can be enjoyed with rice or Indian bread like roti or naan.

  • 1 cup toor dal (yellow split peas)
  • 2 cans mango (or fresh mango), sliced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 clove galangal or ginger
  • 1 teaspoon garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon ghee
  • 1 teaspoon hing powder
  • 3 teaspoons turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon chilli powder
  • 2 teaspoons mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon fenugreek leaves

  • Saucepan for boiling dal and mangoes

Procedure

  1. Soak the toor dal overnight in water.
  2. Boil the soaked dal in water until soft. Rinse, drain, and set aside.
  3. Boil the mango slices in their juice. Add the boiled dal and additional water if needed.
  4. Sauté the chopped onion, ginger paste, and garlic paste in oil until golden brown.
  5. In another pan, heat ghee and add hing, turmeric, garam masala, chilli powder, mustard seeds, and cumin.
  6. Add all mixtures to the boiling pot of mango and dal.
  7. Add fenugreek leaves and continue boiling for a few more minutes.
  8. Allow to cool slightly before serving with rotis or naan and rice.
