Magha Shraddha Rituals: Honouring Ancestors with Devotion and Respect

Magha Shraddha, also known as Magha Trayodashi Shraddha, is a significant Hindu ritual. It honours forefathers and deceased family members. This ritual takes place during the Pitru Paksha, a fortnight dedicated to ancestors. The festival is observed on the Amavasya (no moon day) of the Hindu Magha month. In 2024, it falls on Sunday, 29th September.

The significance of Magha Shraddha is rooted in ancient texts like the Matsya Purana. It is an auspicious day to pay respects to deceased relatives. The Nakshatra Magha, ruled by 'Pitrs', or spirits of ancestors, plays a key role. Performing Tarpan rituals on this day pleases the ancestor’s soul. This can lead to liberation and peace for the souls of one's forefathers.

Magha Shraddha Honouring Ancestors

On Magha Shraddha, devotees rise early and bathe. The male head of the family performs all Shraddha rituals, including tarpan. Devotees worship their 'Ishta Deva’ to start the rituals. The Pinda Daan ritual follows, where a 'pinda’ made from rice, ghee, cow’s milk, honey, and sugar is offered to ancestors.

Tarpan is another crucial ritual performed on this day. Water mixed with Kusha grass and black sesame seeds is offered to ancestors. It is believed that this greatly appeases them. After completing the puja rituals, food is offered to Brahmins. Additionally, sacred cows, crows, and dogs are fed on Magha Shraddha.

Attire and Food for Magha Shraddha

During Magha Shraddha, devotees wear clean clothes such as dhoti and janeyu. The food prepared is Satvik, which means it is pure and vegetarian. This aligns with the spiritual nature of the rituals performed on this day.

Key Rituals of Magha Shraddha

The key rituals include tarpan and Pinda Daan. Tarpan involves offering water mixed with Kusha grass and black sesame seeds to ancestors. Pinda Daan involves forming a 'pinda’ from rice, ghee, cow’s milk, honey, and sugar. This pinda is then offered to one's ancestors with devotion and respect.

Why Magha Shraddha is Celebrated

Magha Shraddha honours forefathers during Pitru Paksha when the Magha Nakshatra exists during Aparahna Kala. If this Nakshatra prevails partly over two days, the longer duration day is chosen. When it prevails on Trayodashi tithi, it becomes Magha Trayodashi Shraddha.
