Magh Bihu Celebration in Assam: Embracing Tradition and Harvest Joy
Magh Bihu, also known as Bhogali Bihu or Maghar Domahi, is a vibrant festival celebrated in Assam, India. It marks the end of the harvest season and is a time for feasting and joy. The festival is observed on 15th January 2025, a Wednesday. It is a time when farmers celebrate the fruits of their labour.
Magh Bihu holds great significance as it celebrates the end of the harvest season. People worship to seek blessings and prosperity from the Gods during this time. The festival is dedicated to Agni, the Lord of Fire. It is an occasion for community feasts and bonfires, where differences are set aside, and people unite in celebration.

During Magh Bihu, people wear traditional Assamese attire. Men dress in Dhoti-Kurta, while women wear Mekhla-Chadar. These clothes reflect the cultural heritage of Assam and add to the festive spirit.
Delicious Food of Magh Bihu
The festival is synonymous with delicious food. People prepare Chira, Pitha, Laru, Curd, and sweets made from rice, coconut, and til. These traditional dishes are enjoyed by everyone during the celebrations.
Key Rituals of Magh Bihu
The festival is marked by feasts and bonfires. Young people build makeshift huts called Meji and Bhelaghar using bamboo, leaves, and thatch. They feast inside these huts and burn them the next morning as part of the rituals.
How Magh Bihu is Celebrated
Celebrations begin with erecting hut-like Mejis or Bhelaghars using bamboo, hay, and dry leaves. As Bhogali suggests feasting, this Bihu involves preparing a variety of sweets from rice, coconut, and til. On Uruka night, community feasts are held with local delicacies like fish and meat inside Mejis.
After burning Mejis, people enjoy traditional Assamese food. In villages, bullfights and bird fights are common attractions. Amid flute notes and buffalo horns, youths sing Bihu songs celebrating a good harvest.
Historical Story Behind Magh Bihu
The festival has roots in Tibeto-Burman, Austroasiatic, and Indo-Aryan cultures. It shares similarities with festivals like Magan of Kachari. This rich cultural tapestry adds depth to the celebrations.
