Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay's much-anticipated film Jana Nayagan is likely to receive its censor certificate this weekend, NDTV reported citing sources.

Going by the reports, the Tamil movie is likely to be released for Vijay's birthday in June. However, the makers are likely to make a formal announcement after getting the certificate from the censor board.
The film had initially completed the certification process in December 2025, when the CBFC's Examining Committee reviewed the movie and suggested a few edits. Producers claimed those changes were implemented promptly, and the film was originally scheduled for release on 9 January 2026.
However, the process became complicated after one member of the Examining Committee reportedly raised objections to certain scenes in the film. The member is said to have written directly to CBFC chairperson Prasoon Joshi, prompting the matter to be referred to the Revising Committee for a fresh assessment.
The delay led the makers of Jana Nayagan to pursue legal action. The film's director approached the Madras High Court and later the Supreme Court of India regarding the prolonged certification process.
Further, the Model Code of Conduct contributed to the delay in issuing the certificate. Producers are now awaiting the formal censor approval before announcing a revised release date.
The film has generated widespread public interest because it stars sitting Chief Minister Vijay in the lead role, making it one of the most closely followed Tamil film releases in recent years.
Speaking to NDTV, producer Venkat K Narayana explained the circumstances surrounding the delay. He said the production team had been waiting for the CBFC's final approval before proceeding with the theatrical release.
Venkat also noted that Vijay's political rise had added a new significance to the film's title. According to him, many fans have requested that the actor's title card in the film be changed from "Thalapathy Vijay" to "Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu". He described the situation as an unexpected but positive development, saying it now seemed fitting that the film would release after Vijay became Chief Minister.
Recalling the certification process, Venkat stated that the film had initially been cleared for a U/A 16+ rating by the Examining Committee. However, instead of receiving the certificate, the producers were informed via email that a complaint had been lodged against the film, forcing the CBFC to withhold certification and send it to the Revising Committee.
He further revealed that the complaint allegedly came from a member of the Examining Committee itself, despite the committee having earlier approved the film. According to Venkat, this unexpected objection significantly prolonged the process, though the producers have continued to comply with all required formalities while awaiting the final certificate.
The movie, written and directed by H Vinoth, has Pooja Hegde playing the female lead. Bobby Deol plays the negative role while Mamitha Baiju will be seen in key role. Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Nassar, Reba Monica John, Revathi and others are in the cast.
The film has Anirudh's music, Sathyan Sooryan's cinematography and Pradeep E. Ragav's editing.
