Karwa Chauth 2024: 4 Essential Rules For Healthy Fasting And Hydration
Karwa Chauth involves fasting for married women's health and well-being. Dr. Pawan Kumar Goyal advises on nutritious meals, hydration, and mindful fasting for a healthier experience.
Karwa Chauth, a significant festival celebrated by married women in India, involves fasting from sunrise to moonrise to pray for their husbands' longevity and prosperity.
This year, it is observed on October 20, highlighting the sacred bond shared between couples.

4 Essential Rules For Healthy Fasting And Hydration
However, maintaining health during this rigorous fast is crucial. Dr. Pawan Kumar Goyal, a top internal medicine expert at Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, emphasizes the importance of a balanced approach to fasting, ensuring women prioritize their well-being while observing this tradition.
Dr. Goyal advises starting the Karwa Chauth fast with a nutritious pre-dawn meal known as sargi. It should include proteins, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats, providing sustained energy throughout the day, as reported by Hindustan Times. Foods like yogurt, paneer, whole grains, oats, nuts, and seeds are recommended, while sugary and fried foods should be avoided to prevent energy slumps. This balanced meal is crucial for keeping energy levels stable and helping women feel full for a longer period.
"Hydration is key to a healthy fast," says Dr. Goyal, stressing the importance of drinking plenty of fluids the day before Karwa Chauth. He suggests consuming water, coconut water, lemonade, and fresh fruit juices to prevent dehydration, headaches, and fatigue. This preparation helps in ensuring that the fasting period is as comfortable as possible, allowing for a more meaningful observance of the festival.
Dr. Goyal also highlights the necessity of listening to one's body and recognizing physical limits during the fast. He cautions, "Fasting is a personal choice, but it's important to recognize the limits of your body. If you feel dizzy, extremely fatigued, or unwell during the fast, consider breaking it early." He specifically advises pregnant women and those with medical conditions such as diabetes or those on certain medications to consult their doctors before fasting, as it may not be safe for everyone., as per media reports.
Breaking the fast should also be approached with care. To avoid overloading the digestive system after a day without food, Dr. Goyal suggests consuming something light, like fruits or a glass of water, immediately after the fast ends. Gradually introducing easily digestible foods such as soups, salads, and home-cooked meals can help prevent indigestion and discomfort. Eating mindfully is key to a smooth transition back to regular meals.
In conclusion, Karwa Chauth is more than just a tradition; it's a day that strengthens the bond between married couples. By following Dr. Goyal's advice, women can celebrate this festival with enthusiasm while also taking care of their health. Drinking plenty of fluids before the fast, consuming a balanced sargi, listening to their bodies, and breaking the fast gently are all steps towards a healthier fasting experience. This approach ensures that the spirit of Karwa Chauth is preserved without compromising on health.
