Karthigai Deepam Festival 2024: Embracing Light And Tradition Across Tamil Nadu

Karthigai Deepam is a vibrant festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and parts of Andhra Pradesh. It falls in the Tamil month of Karthikai when the Karthigai Nakshatra coincides with the full moon. This year, it will be observed on Friday, 12th December 2024. The festival is dedicated to Lord Kartikeya, also known as Muruga.

The festival symbolises the infinite nature of God. According to legend, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu argued over their supremacy. To resolve this, Lord Shiva appeared as a flame. Neither Brahma nor Vishnu could find its beginning or end. This story highlights the boundless existence of God.

On this day, people clean their homes and draw 'Kolams' using rice and flour paste. Lamps called 'Agal' are lit and placed before deities. Fasting is observed until sunset, followed by special feasts. The main lamp, Karthigai Maha Deepam, is lit after sunset with a flame from Bharani Deepam.

In Andhra Pradesh, a flame is carried to a hilltop to light the Karthigai Maha Deepam. A large lamp with 365 wicks is lit to ward off evil. The holy text of Kartheeka Puranam is recited to invite good fortune.

The historical story behind Karthigai Deepam involves Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu's quest for supremacy. Their conflict led Lord Shiva to appear as an endless flame, symbolising God's infinite nature. This event also marks the emergence of Lord Muruga from six flames from Shiva's eyes, forming six babies known as 'Saravana Poigai'.
