Kamika Ekadashi 2024: Puja Rituals

Devotees begin the day with a ritualistic bath early in the morning. This act of purification is essential to cleanse the body and mind before commencing the worship.

An altar is set up with an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu. The altar is decorated with flowers, incense, lamps, and other offerings. Devotees take a sankalpa, a solemn vow to observe the fast and perform the puja with utmost devotion and sincerity.

The puja starts with the invocation of Lord Vishnu, seeking his presence and blessings. Mantras and hymns dedicated to Lord Vishnu are chanted. Devotees offer flowers, fruits, tulsi leaves, and other items to the deity. Special dishes prepared without grains are also offered as naivedyam (food offering).

The puja concludes with the aarti, a ritual of waving lighted lamps before the deity while singing devotional songs. Many devotees spend the day singing bhajans (devotional songs) and kirtans (spiritual chants) in praise of Lord Vishnu.

Observing a night vigil, known as jagran, is considered highly meritorious. Devotees stay awake throughout the night, chanting the name of the Lord and engaging in devotional activities. The fast is typically broken the next day, after performing the Dwadashi puja and offering food to the deity. This concludes the Ekadashi vrat.
