Guru Nanak Jayanti 2024: Celebrating the Birth of Sikhism's Founder

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Guru Purab or Prakash Parv, is a significant festival celebrated by Sikhs worldwide. This festival marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. In 2024, it will be celebrated on Friday, 15th November. The day is filled with devotion and community service.

Guru Nanak Jayanti holds great importance for Sikhs. It commemorates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who founded Sikhism in the 15th century. His teachings focus on overcoming five evils: lust, anger, greed, attachment, and pride. Sikhs take an oath to follow these teachings on this day.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 in Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi, now known as Nankana Sahib in Pakistan. He was well-versed in both Islam and Hinduism. He believed in one God and taught that people could connect with God through remembrance and worship with any name.

How Guru Nanak Jayanti is Celebrated

The celebrations start early in the morning with singing prayers at 4:00 AM, known as Amrit Vela. Devotees sing Asa ki Vaar (morning hymns) and recite Kathas (holy stories). This is followed by Kirtan (hymns) as per Sikh traditions. A community lunch called Langar is organized in Gurdwaras.

Key Rituals of Guru Nanak Jayanti

Ahead of the festival, Sikhs organize Prabhat Feri every morning for 15 days. Akhand Path, a continuous reading of Guru Granth Sahib for 48 hours, is held two days before the celebration. A Nagarkirtan is organized a day before the main event. These rituals are performed with devotion.

Traditional Attire and Food

On this day, people wear traditional attire like Kurta Pyjama, Pathani suit, or Salwar suit. The festival features delicious foods such as Kada Parshad, Langar ki Dal, Meethe Chawal, Amritsari Kulche, Rajma Chawal, Samosa, and Jalebi.
