Google Doodle Celebrates Rita Lobato Velho: Brazilian Doctor and Public Health Pioneer
Today’s Google Doodle celebrates Rita Lobato Velho, a Brazilian doctor and researcher. She was a pioneer in public health. Velho was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1896 and graduated from medical school in 1919. She worked as a doctor in various public health clinics, witnessing the effects of poverty and disease.

In 1923, Velho founded Brazil's first school of nursing. Later, she became the first female director of the National Department of Public Health. In this role, she oversaw the country's public health programs. She worked tirelessly to improve the health of the Brazilian people.
Velho was a strong advocate for women’s rights. She also criticised the Brazilian government’s neglect of public health. She died in 1966, but her legacy lives on through many public health professionals inspired by her.
The Google Doodle is a fitting tribute to Velho’s life and work. It reminds us of the importance of public health and the power of women to make a difference in the world.
