Today's Google Doodle celebrates Jacqueline Harpman, a Belgian author and psychoanalyst born on this day in 1929. Harpman is renowned for her work in literature, particularly for her insightful exploration of human nature. Her books have been praised for their depth and sensitivity.

Harpman was born in Etterbeek, Brussels, Belgium. She spent part of her childhood in Casablanca, Morocco before returning to Belgium in 1945. She studied French Literature and dreamt of becoming a doctor but had to abandon medical school after contracting tuberculosis.

In 1954, Harpman decided to pursue a career as an author. After four years of writing, she released her debut novel "L'Amour et Acacia" (Love and the Acacia). Her second novel, "Brève Arcadie," won the Prix Rossel in 1959, a prestigious Belgian literary award.

Harpman's work often explored themes of captivity and surreal scenarios like body swaps. Her interest in the unconscious mind is evident throughout her literary career. In 1966, she took a twenty-year break from writing to focus on psychology and became a psychoanalyst.

She returned to writing in the 1990s, producing eight books during that decade. Her 1996 novel "Orlanda" won the Prix Médicis, an award given annually in France to an underrated author. Harpman's last book, "Moi qui n'ai pas connu les hommes" (I who have never known men), went viral online, gaining her a new generation of fans.

In 2019, the city of Brussels named a street after her to honour her contributions to Belgian culture. Harpman's legacy continues to inspire current and future authors to delve into the complexities of human nature through their writing.
