Gangaur Festival 2025: A Celebration of Tradition and Devotion in Rajasthan
Gangaur, also known as Gauri Puja, is a vibrant Hindu festival celebrated with great enthusiasm, especially in Rajasthan. It falls on 31st March 2025, a Monday. The festival honours Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, marking the end of winter and the start of spring. It is a time for devotion, rituals, and cultural festivities.
Gangaur is celebrated mainly by married women for the long life and prosperity of their husbands. Unmarried girls also participate, seeking blessings from Goddess Parvati for a suitable partner. The festival is observed in Northern India, particularly in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Gujarat.

The festival begins with the installation of idols of Kanishtha and Jyeshtha in homes. Devotees wake up early to take a holy bath before starting the rituals. Wearing new red clothes is customary. Married women apply mehndi on their hands and adorn themselves with jewellery as part of the celebrations.
How Gangaur is Celebrated
Gangaur puja commemorates the first day of the Anuradha Nakshatra. People worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with devotion. Large feasts and cultural programs are organised during this time. The festival lasts for 18 days, starting after Holi in the month of Chitra according to the Hindu calendar.
Traditional Attire and Food
During Gangaur, devotees wear red-coloured traditional attire or new clothes. Ghewar, a sweet delicacy, is commonly prepared and enjoyed during the festival. This adds to the festive spirit and brings families together to celebrate.
