Diwali 2024 Date Confusion Cleared—Celebrate On October 31 or November 1?

As Diwali approaches in 2024, confusion surrounds the celebration date, with some communities observing the festival on October 31 and others on November 1.

This uncertainty arises from the Amavasya Tithi, or new moon phase, which falls on both days.

Diwali 2024 Date Confusion Cleared

Understanding the Date Confusion

Diwali is traditionally celebrated on the Amavasya of the Kartik month. In 2024, the Amavasya Tithi begins at 3:52 PM on October 31 and concludes at 6:16 PM on November 1, according to Drikpanchang.com. This overlapping timing has led to diverse practices across different regions and communities, resulting in split celebrations.

The situation became significant enough that over 100 astrologers, religious scholars, and Sanskrit experts convened at the Central Sanskrit University in Jaipur for the 'Deepawali Nirnay Dharmasabha' to clarify the matter. They concluded that the main Diwali celebration in India should occur on October 31, as the Amavasya Tithi encompasses the entire Pradosh Kaal (the two hours and 24 minutes after sunset) on that date, providing a more auspicious timeframe for rituals.

In contrast, November 1 offers a very brief window for Pradosh Kaal, making it less favorable for conducting Lakshmi Puja, which is a central part of Diwali festivities. Notable scholars like Professor Rampal Shastri and Professor Arknath Chaudhary emphasized that the traditional guidelines, as noted in scriptures, support celebrating Diwali on October 31.

While India predominantly favors October 31, countries such as Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, and Singapore will observe Diwali on November 1.

Celebration Timings

For those marking Diwali on October 31, the auspicious window for rituals aligns with the Pradosh Kaal, a period considered highly favorable for worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, who embodies prosperity and abundance. Celebrants can focus their festivities around this time for maximum spiritual benefit.

Meanwhile, those celebrating on November 1 will have their specific window for festivities, particularly between 5:36 PM and 6:16 PM, just before the Amavasya Tithi concludes.

The 5-Day Diwali Festival

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a five-day festival that begins on October 29 with Dhanteras, followed by Kali Chaudas on October 30, Chhoti Diwali (Narak Chaturdashi) on October 31 and culminates in the main Diwali celebration on November 1. The festival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil, rooted in ancient Hindu mythology surrounding Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana.

This year's varying celebration dates highlight not only regional customs but also the complexities of the lunar calendar. As communities prepare for this vibrant festival, they continue to uphold traditions that foster unity and joy during this significant time of year.
