Char Dham Yatra Routes, Dates & New Rules: What Pilgrims Need to Know

The annual Char Dham Yatra has begun for 2026, with the opening of Yamunotri Temple and Gangotri Temple on Akshaya Tritiya. After a six-month winter pause, the sacred Himalayan pilgrimage route is once again active, drawing thousands of devotees to Uttarakhand.

The Char Dham Yatra remains one of the most important spiritual circuits in India, covering four key temples-Yamunotri Temple, Gangotri Temple, Kedarnath Temple, and Badrinath Temple. Pilgrims typically follow the traditional Char Dham route starting from Yamunotri, then Gangotri, moving to Kedarnath, and concluding at Badrinath.

For Char Dham Yatra 2026, the temple opening dates have been scheduled within a limited seasonal window due to extreme weather conditions in the region. Yamunotri and Gangotri opened on April 19, while Kedarnath opened on April 22 and Badrinath on April 23. The Char Dham Yatra closing dates extend into November, making advance travel planning crucial for pilgrims.

The Char Dham travel route usually begins from Haridwar, Rishikesh, or Dehradun-major gateways for the Char Dham circuit. From here, travellers move through mountain roads connecting each dham.

The Yamunotri route includes a trek from Janki Chatti, while the Gangotri route is fully motorable. The Kedarnath Yatra is considered the most challenging, requiring a 16-18 km trek from Gaurikund, though helicopter services via IRCTC are available. The Badrinath route is the most accessible, with direct road connectivity.

Char Dham helicopter services from Dehradun are also in high demand, offering a quicker alternative to the traditional multi-day journey.

For Char Dham Yatra 2026, new rules have also been introduced. Entry guidelines have been updated at Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Gangotri, while Yamunotri continues to remain open to all श्रद्धालु. Authorities have also enforced a ban on mobile phones and cameras inside temple premises to maintain the sanctity of the Char Dham pilgrimage.

With registrations rising and preparations underway, the Char Dham Yatra is expected to see a massive turnout this year, reinforcing its status as a key spiritual journey in India.
