A Lifetime of Numbers: The Inspirational Saga of IIIT-Bangalore’s Subramani K.
In the quiet corners of our hustling world, a man sits absorbed in thought, his mind weaving a tapestry of numbers and patterns. This is the world of Subramani K., a man whose life story is a testament to resilience, passion, and the magic of curiosity.
Born into a modest family, Subramani grew up watching his father toil as a carpenter. It was in these early years, amidst sketches of furniture and designs, that young Subramani's fascination with geometry and numbers took root that shaped his life forever.

As a child, he questioned the traditional ways of doing mathematics. Why multiply from right to left and why divide from left to right? These innocent yet profound musings marked the beginning of his extraordinary journey with numbers that later in life led him to the Ramanujan Innovative Research Award. Numbers seem to dance to Subramani's tune, whether it's simplifying large multiplications in a single line or instantly pinpointing the day of the week for any given date.
But life was not kind to the dreamer. Financial hardships shadowed his path, especially after marriage and the birth of his children. To support his family, Subramani juggled odd jobs while nurturing his love for mathematics in stolen moments. He delved deeper into his studies, crafting mathematical wonders that would later earn him international acclaim.
In 2013, he created the longest single-page calendars for both AD and BC, earning him World Record certificates from Record Holders Republic UK. This was followed by the creation of a 10,000-year Hindu calendar table that could approximate Nakshatras and Tithis on just two pages. These groundbreaking achievements although put him on the global map but did little to ease his financial struggles.
Recognition remained elusive, and frustration began to take its toll. Yet, in his darkest moments, a few guiding lights emerged. Esteemed mentors such as Dr. S Balachandra Rao, former Principal of National College Bangalore, and Prof. M.A. Venkatachar, former Principal of Vijaya College, recognized his potential and offered their support. Other luminaries like Smt. B.S. Shylaja, former Director of the Nehru Planetarium, Prof. Doddarange Gowda and Shri Janaki Rama Reddy also played pivotal roles in encouraging him to persevere.
When hope seemed faintest, fortune finally smiled upon him. Disheartened by constant rejection and teetering on the brink of despair, Subramani made one last attempt to present his work to the Infosys Foundation. It was a turning point. Moved by his talent and determination, the foundation extended a helping hand, providing him with a stable source of income and the means to pursue his passion without the weight of financial worries.
Today, Subramani K. works as a staff member at IIIT-Bangalore. In his free time, he continues to explore the endless possibilities of numbers, creating marvels that leave the world in awe. His accomplishments include the fastest calculation of an 18-digit number multiplied by the Ramanujan-Hardy number 1729, largest magic square in MS-Excel, and largest Latin square using one thousand Pi numbers. Most recently, he was honored with the prestigious Ramanujan Innovative Research Award at the 18th National Maths Convention held at Gujarat Science city, Ahmedabad on December 20-22, 2024-an accolade he describes as the "most special achievement" of his life.
Despite earning international acclaim and recognition, Subramani remains remarkably grounded, his humility as profound as his brilliance. He graciously credits his success to the mentors and well-wishers who stood by him when others doubted. One can only anticipate that his journey will soon yield yet another dazzling Eureka moment.
