West Bengal Assembly passes resolution to change state's name to 'Bangla'
Kolkata, July 26: The West Bengal Assembly on Thursday passed the bill to change the state's name from West Bengal to 'Bangla'. The resolution would now be sent to the Home Ministry for approval.
The Home Ministry had earlier sent back the state's plan to change the name to "Bengal" in English, "Bangla" in Bengali and "Bangal" in Hindi. The Home Ministry had reservations with the three different names.
After this, the state cabinet passed a resolution to change the name of the state to "Bangla" in all languages on September 8 last year.
If the Home Ministry gives a green signal, then West Bengal's name would officially be changed to 'Bangla'.
