Tragedy In Kaliganj: Minor Killed As Bomb Explodes During Bypoll Celebrations
A tragic incident unfolded on June 23, 2025, in Barochandgar village of Nadia district, West Bengal, where a young girl lost her life in a bomb explosion during the counting of votes for the Kaliganj Assembly by-election. The victim, identified in conflicting reports as either a 9-year-old or a 13-year-old Class 4 student named Tamanna Khatun, was walking to a nearby pond with her mother when the blast occurred. The explosion happened in the afternoon, coinciding with a Trinamool Congress (TMC) victory procession following their win in the bypoll.
Local residents described a scene of panic and chaos after the sudden explosion. The blast site falls under the jurisdiction of Kaliganj police station. The girl was struck by the bomb and succumbed to her injuries soon after.

Political Fallout and Investigation Launched
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep sorrow over the incident and assured the public that the police would take "strong and decisive legal action" against those responsible. She also conveyed condolences to the victim's family and ordered a thorough probe.
Political tensions escalated as CPI(M) leaders alleged that the girl belonged to a Left-supporting family and that the explosion was linked to post-poll violence during TMC celebrations. TMC leaders condemned the incident and stated that such acts should have no place in political festivities.
The girl's body has been sent for post-mortem, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the blast and identify those responsible. While the bypoll had otherwise proceeded without incident, the Kaliganj constituency is known for its history of political unrest. The tragedy has reignited public concern over the use of crude bombs and the persistent issue of political violence in West Bengal.
