Kolkata Police Arrests Singer Sanjay Chakraborty For Child Molestation

In a significant development, Sanjay Chakraborty, a well-known singer and composer, was apprehended by the Kolkata Police in Mumbai on charges of molesting a minor. This arrest came after an extensive search spanning nearly two months. Chakraborty, who is the sibling of the distinguished Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, faced accusations stemming from an incident that reportedly transpired at a yoga institute in Kolkata, where he was conducting singing lessons.

The incident, which occurred in June, involved a 15-year-old girl student who was allegedly molested by Chakraborty after classes had concluded and the other students had departed. The matter surfaced when the victim disclosed the ordeal to her doctor in Bengaluru, where she had gone for psychological treatment. Her revelations led her parents to learn about the incident for the first time, prompting them to file a complaint against Chakraborty.

The Kolkata Police acted on the complaint, which was initially sent via email to the Belgharia police station in September. Given the nature of the allegations and the location of the incident within their operational area, the case was subsequently handed over to Charu Market police station for further investigation. Authorities stated they would be scrutinizing CCTV footage from the institute and interviewing students and witnesses to gather more evidence.

Chakraborty was charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and taken into custody. Following his court appearance, he was remanded to police custody until November 18. The police team from Charu Market station in Mumbai successfully executed the arrest after tracking him down to the city.

This case has drawn attention to the importance of vigilance and the need for swift action in incidents involving the safety and welfare of minors. The investigation is ongoing, with the police keen on collecting all pertinent evidence to ensure justice is served.
