Rape, Blackmail and Fear: The Case Against Monojit Mishra

Monojit Mishra, 31, was a former student and recently hired ad-hoc staff member at South Calcutta Law College. He led the Trinamool Congress's student wing at the college from 2017 and remained influential even after graduating in 2022. Known on campus as "Monojit dada" or "Mango," he was feared by students, teachers, and staff.

Despite being disowned by his father for violent behavior, Mishra returned to the college in 2025 as a contractual staffer. He had a long history of criminal activities, with at least five police cases filed against him, including for stabbing, assault, sexual harassment, extortion, and theft. In 2019, he reportedly tore a female student's clothes and stole from a friend's house. In May 2024, he damaged college property and assaulted a guard.

Over the years, Mishra and his group - including co-accused Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed - were known for harassing women. They allegedly stalked female students, morphed their photos, spread rumors, and blackmailed them with videos.

On June 25, 2025, a 24-year-old student was called to the union room with the false promise of being offered a student leader role. When she refused Mishra's marriage proposal, she was locked in, threatened, and then gang-raped by Mishra and two others. The guard allegedly helped them. They also recorded the crime to blackmail her.

The medical report confirmed signs of sexual assault, and CCTV footage showed her being dragged into the college. Mishra and the others were arrested soon after.

The case has caused public outrage and raised serious questions about how Mishra was allowed to act with impunity for so long, despite many past complaints. Police are now investigating how he continued to operate on campus unchecked.
