Padma Awardee Monk Accused Of Rape In West Bengal
A woman from West Bengal has accused Kartik Maharaj, a monk and Padma Shri awardee, of raping her multiple times in 2013. She claims he promised her a teaching job at a school. Kartik Maharaj, associated with the Bharat Sevashram Sangha and known for his BJP connections, has denied these allegations.
According to the woman, Kartik Maharaj took her to an ashram in Murshidabad under the pretense of offering her a teaching position. She was provided accommodation at the ashram. However, she alleges that one night, the monk entered her room and assaulted her.

Allegations Against Kartik Maharaj
The woman claims that between January and June 2013, she was raped by the monk at least 12 times. She remained silent for years due to fear and helplessness. The complainant mentioned that Kartik Maharaj threatened suicide if she reported him to the police.
Police sources have confirmed that a complaint has been filed against Kartik Maharaj. A case has been registered under relevant sections, and an investigation is currently ongoing.
Kartik Maharaj's Response
Kartik Maharaj, who received the Padma Shri award this year, has denied any wrongdoing. He stated there is indeed accommodation available at the ashram mentioned by the woman. "I am a sanyasi. Such obstacles are not uncommon in the life of a monk," he remarked.
The monk's legal team plans to address these allegations in court. His close ties with the BJP have brought additional attention to this case. Previously, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused him of aiding the BJP in elections against Trinamool Congress.
Political Implications
Maharaj had sent a legal notice to Banerjee in 2024 demanding an apology for allegedly tarnishing his ashram's image. This incident surfaces amid protests against the ruling Trinamool government following another rape allegation involving a law student on a Kolkata college campus.
