Metro Services On Kolkata’s Purple Line To Increase Starting May 5
Beginning on Monday, May 5, Kolkata Metro plans to increase the number of daily train services on the Joka-Majerhat segment of the Purple Line in order to improve commuter convenience. Metro authorities estimate that the number of daily services will more than double, from the present 18 to 40, providing inhabitants in the southwest part of the city with much better connectivity.
The Purple Line's train frequency will significantly increase as a result of this renovation. There will be only a 22-minute gap between two services instead of the current 50-minute gap. In order to better serve the increasing number of passengers on this route, metro officials announced this improvement on Saturday.

The Joka-Majerhat section, operating independently for now, forms a crucial part of the Purple Line. Work is currently in progress to extend the line from Majerhat to Esplanade. Once completed, this extension will connect the Purple Line with the existing Blue and Green lines, fully integrating it into Kolkata's broader metro network and boosting city-wide connectivity.
As of now, train operations on the Purple Line are restricted to weekdays, with no services on Saturdays and Sundays. Metro officials have not announced any change to this weekend closure policy at this time.
This move to expand services is seen as a significant step toward enhancing public transport in Kolkata, particularly for the southern parts of the city.
