Mamata Banerjee Announces Financial Aid For Group C, D Staff After SC Ruling

On Saturday, Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, provided temporary financial support for the non-teaching Group C and D employees who were protesting after the Supreme Court revoked their appointments. She said that Group D employees would receive Rs 20,000 in immediate support, while Group C employees would receive Rs 25,000.

Banerjee promised that the state government would shortly submit a review petition to the Supreme Court that would include the Group C and D employees as well as the impacted teachers. "We'll look for an evaluation of both the teaching and non-teaching staff. There are still legal consultations going on," Banerjee stated. She went on to say that the administration will look into other options if the review petition was denied. "Since you are not receiving salaries now, we will assist you through our social security schemes," she added.

Banerjee declared temporary financial support to provide relief while the legal proceedings are ongoing. "We will offer this financial assistance until the outcome of the review petition is determined. In response to the irate workers' worries, she responded, "Let's see if they accept it."

Also, the Chief Minister explained that she had not yet gotten an official list that distinguished between "tainted" and "untainted" instructors, therefore she chose not to comment.

The problem stems from a Supreme Court decision on April 3 that declared the 2016 hiring panel for teaching and non-teaching positions in state-aided institutions to be void because of several irregularities. A total of 25,753 people lost their employment as a result. The non-teaching Group C and D employees were not granted the same respite, even though the supreme court eventually permitted "untainted" instructors to continue working until December 31, 2024.

In order to prevent impacted teachers from being compelled to quit their professions or take new recruitment exams, Banerjee underlined that the state is collaborating with senior attorneys.
