Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital Staff Describe Scene Of Panic As Police Sought Refuge During Mob Attack
Chaos erupted at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata early Thursday, as a mob of hundreds vandalised property and terrorised the staff, leaving a scene of fear and destruction in their wake.
The situation became so dire that police officers, stationed at the hospital following the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor the previous week, sought refuge with the nurses.

One nurse recounted the harrowing experience: "The police sought safety from us. Two officers, who were on duty, said, 'Please hide us in your ward.'"
The mob's primary target appeared to be the seminar room where the tragic incident had occurred.
"They wanted to break into the seminar room," she explained, adding that while the mob couldn't reach the third floor where the crime took place, they devastated the second floor in their frenzy.
Nurses described the night as a terrifying ordeal.
"We went downstairs, and we were so afraid... We saw our junior and senior nurses crying in fear due to the attack," said one nurse.
Another nurse expressed deep concern for their safety, stating, "We feel we can be killed at any time."
In response to the violence, hospital staff staged protests on Thursday morning, demanding stronger security measures.
"Such hooliganism inside a hospital is unacceptable," one nurse declared.
The mob not only vandalised the emergency ward, nursing station, medicine store, and outpatient department but also destroyed CCTV cameras and a stage where junior doctors have been protesting the trainee doctor's tragic death.
Following the night of chaos, a civic police volunteer has been arrested in connection with the doctor's killing, and additional police forces have been deployed to the hospital.
