Kolkata Law Student Gang-Rape: Security Guard Arrested, Fourth Accused In Custody

A security guard at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata has been arrested in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student, becoming the fourth person taken into custody in the case. The incident is reported to have occurred on Wednesday evening inside the guard's room located within the college campus.

According to the survivor's statement, the assault took place after she was lured into staying back on the pretext of being promised a key student union position by the main accused, 31-year-old Monojit Mishra. Mishra is a former student of the college and currently serves as an ad-hoc staff member. He, along with two present students-19-year-old Zaib Ahmed and 20-year-old Pramit Mukhopadhyay-were arrested on Thursday.

The survivor claims she had turned down a marriage proposal from Mishra, after which she was forcibly taken to the guard's room, where the assault occurred. She further alleges that she was threatened with physical violence and blackmailed using video recordings during the ordeal.

The arrested security guard is suspected of either complicity or gross negligence, as per the survivor's testimony, which states that the guard was deliberately asked to leave the room before the assault took place. His involvement is being closely examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

A medical examination of the survivor has confirmed evidence consistent with her allegations, including signs of forced penetration and physical injury.

All four accused are currently in police custody as the investigation continues. Senior police officials have visited the college to oversee the probe, and witness statements are actively being collected.

The case has ignited widespread public anger and political controversy in West Bengal, particularly because of Monojit Mishra's reported association with the student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress.
