Kolkata: Army suspends rescue work after cops interfere; resumes work later
Kolkata, March 31: Army personnel who were called in to help in the rescue operation after a massive chunk of an under-construction flyover collapsed in Jorashanko area of North Kolkata collapsed on Thursday afternoon temporarily suspended their operation allegedly because some top official of the local police interfered, Bengali news channel ABP Ananda said.
Reports said the official interfered in the jawans' work and asked them to allow the police to do its work. The jawans, who helped pull out a number of bodies from under the rubble, expressed disappointment over this and stopped their work.

It was said the Army rushed in to save the lives with whatever resources it had at its disposal. But a top police officer reportedly told them that it is the police's work. Rescue operation was delayed by almost three hours on Thursday afternoon, after the incident happened. The state authorities gave a SoS call to the Army to help it in the rescue operation.
Several vehicles including a bus were still trapped under the debris even as the Army and police faced problems in coordination.
The Army resumed the rescue work later.
