Fire breaks out at Bengal hospital; 2 dead

Murshidabad (West Bengal), Aug 27: Two persons, including a child, were killed after a big fire broke out at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital on Saturday (aug 27) afternoon near its children's ward. The other victim was a nurse.

Many were feared trapped inside the building as the fire spread to the hospital's neonatal and MRI units. Hospital authorities said the incident caused a panic even as the fire was controlled later.

Four fire engines were sent to the spot to tame the blaze.

Some of the hospital staff members got reportedly injured as panic-stricken patients and their family members tried to rush out of the hospital, even by breaking window glasses.

Bengal fire services minister Sovan Chatterjee later said the fire was under control and things were being monitored.

Several newborns in the hospital were brought out in the open after the fire broke out. Several of them also fell sick because of the smoke.

Primary reports said the fire could have been caused by a short circuit.
