Poll-busy Kolkata looks up, sees strange halo around sun

Kolkata, April 30: Even as the people of three districts of West Bengal were busy voting in the fifth and the penultimate phase of the ongoing Assembly election, a unique celestial phenomenon happened around noon.

A halo around the sun was seen from state capital Kolkata and many other places in the hot afternoon. A display of the seven rainbow colours was also noticed in the sky.

As the phenomenon gave birth to curiosity, experts said it was caused by the refraction of the light rays of the sun or moon on the randomly oriented hexagonal ice-crystals suspended in the air. It is called 22-degree halo and is an optical phenomenon.

It was also learnt that such a phenomenon happens before an impending storm, a news which brought relief to the citizens who have been facing a ruthless summer this year.
