Kolkata, Nov 1: Sisters prayed for their brothers' well-being and renewed bonds of sibling love as West Bengal celebrated 'Bhai Phonta' (Brother's Day) on Tuesday amid traditional fervour.

Dressed in ethnic wear, sisters applied 'teekaa' or 'phonta' on their brothers' foreheads, offered them sweets and received gifts in exchange.

Brothers with foreheads dotted with sandalwood paste, vermillion and rice grains, clicked selfies to capture the moment.

Special chocolate hampers and customised sweets flew off the shelves in top confectionaries as many preferred to do it differently this year.

But the traditional Bengali snack called 'Khajaa' (sugar syrup gazed snack) continued to be the essential item on the menu.

Celebrities took time out from their busy schedule to indulge in the festive atmosphere complete with food fiestas and cultural programmes.

Toddlers decked up in specially crafted dhotis, salwars and saris celebrated 'Bhai Phonta' and enjoyed their day off from their kindergartens.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to social media to wish denizens on the occasion.

However, this year, sex workers of Sonagachi, shied away from the festival citing lack of funds.
