Bengal girl selected for Nasa programme

Kolkata, March 1: An 18-year-old girl from West Bengal has been selected by US space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) for its prestigious Goddard Internship Programme under the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS).

The girl, Sataparna Mukherjee, a Class 12 student who hails from Kamduni in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, around 30 kilometres from Kolkata, won the Nasa scholariship with her work on 'Black Hole Theory'. In it, she has written a paper on the subject on how it could be used to create a 'Time Machine', a Times of India report said.

Speaking on her selection in Nasa, Satparna said when she shared her paper on 'Black Hole Theory' with the space agency, it received a great appreciation, teh report said.

The teenager, who will appear for her school final examinations this year from St Judes School, Madhyamgram, will pursue her graduation, post-graduation and PhD (as Nasa faculty) in aerospace engineering at the London Astrobiology Centre.

Under the internship programme, Satparna will work as a Nasa employee and reseracher. Besides sponsoring all her expenses, the US space agency will also pay her a generous sum as honorarium.
