Kerala floods : Heavy rains, landslides claim 20 lives
Idukki, Aug 9: Heavy rains and landslides have resulted in 20 deaths across Kerala on Thursday. Five members of a family in Malappuram and five from Idukky died due to landslides.
Also, at least seven people are reported to be missing due to landslides.
Access to many of these places are difficult and is affecting the rescue operations. Idukki has requested for help and will be receiving one column of Army.
Meanwhile, multiple incidents of landslips have been reported in the rural areas of Kozhikode district. The district administration has sought the support of the National Disaster Response Force following multiple incidents of landslips in the rural areas of Kozhikode.
Floods in Kozhikode
Due to heavy rains and resultant floods in Kozhikode and Waynad districts, a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has been moved to Kozhikode.
Holiday for schools
Two NDRF teams have been sought from the Centre for north Kerala. Educational institutions have declared a holiday in Idukki, Kollam and some other districts due to the rains.
18 killed in landslide
According to the disaster control room sources, 10 people were killed in landslides in Idukki, five in Malappuram, two in Kannur and one in Wayanad district. Three persons are missing -- one each in Wayanad, Palakkad and Kozhikode districts.
Traffic disrupted
Several houses were damaged in the landslips occurred within the limits of Thamarassery taluk. Traffic has been disrupted on the Wayanad ghat road as land caved at several stretches.
