Kanpur, June 4: BJP president Amit Shah on Saturday said the time has now come for Uttar Pradesh to choose the saffron party over regional parties like the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party (SP) for the sake of development.

UP is set to go to election early in 2017 and the BJP has a major challenge in proving that its sweeping victory in the state in the 2014 general election was no fluke. The BJP-led NDA won 73 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in UP with the BJP alone bagging 71 of them.

Addressing a rally here, Shah appealed to the people to "come out of SP and BSP and vote for BJP". He attacked both the regional parties saying the state witnesses crime under the SP and both crime and corruption under the BSP. He said it is only under the BJP that one sees development.

He said UP had a big contribution towards the formation of a majority government of the NDA at the Centre. He reposed faith in the people saying they would uproot the SP and help the BJP come to power in the state. The saffron party has not tasted the power to govern UP since 2002.

Shah also took the opportunity to lash out at the Congress for saying the Narendra Modi government at the Centre has done nothing in the last two years. He reiterated that the BJP has given India a decisive and corruption-free government.

"The Opposition is asking as to what we have done in these two years, I want to ask Rahul Ji what have they (Congress) done in so many years. In these 10 years, Congress has only done corruption, and corruption of 12 lakh crore. Be it 2G scam, Helicopter scam, Air India Boeing scam, CWG scam, Adarsh society scam, Submarine scam, everywhere they have done corruption," Shah said.

Also defending PM Modi's foreign visits, Shah said the former has visited less number of countries than his predecessor Manmohan Singh. Singh just read a paper in English and came back and nobody acknowledged his visit, Shah said adding that Modi's visits get welcome abroad and it is more for the people of the country than the PM or his party.
