Zuckerberg Accuses Biden Administration Of Pressuring Meta To Censor Content

In a recent letter to the US Congress, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has accused the Biden Administration of repeatedly pressuring Meta to censor specific content on its platforms.

Addressed to the US House of Representatives, the letter details Zuckerberg's concerns about the influence of government officials on content moderation decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic, as reported by NDTV.

Zuckerberg Accuses Biden Administration - Here's What He Wrote In The LETTER

Zuckerberg expressed regret over Meta's handling of content moderation in 2021, acknowledging that the platform made changes in response to what he describes as undue pressure from the White House. "With the benefit of hindsight and new information, we would not make those same decisions today," Zuckerberg wrote. He added that he wishes Meta had been more vocal about resisting these pressures.

The letter highlights a period when senior Biden Administration officials allegedly pressed Meta to remove or limit certain COVID-19-related content, including humour and satire. Despite the pressure, Zuckerberg asserts that the final decisions on content removal rested with Meta, as reported by NDTV. He criticized the government's actions as inappropriate and pledged that Meta would stand firm against similar pressures in the future.

Zuckerberg also addressed another contentious issue: a 2020 decision to demote a New York Post story about corruption allegations involving Joe Biden's family. The story was initially flagged for fact-checking and temporarily demoted based on an FBI warning about potential Russian disinformation.

Zuckerberg admitted that, in retrospect, the decision to demote the story was a mistake and assured that Meta has since revised its policies to prevent such issues in the future. The platform no longer temporarily demotes content while awaiting fact-checker reviews, as per media reports.

In addition to addressing content moderation issues, Zuckerberg reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the electoral infrastructure in a non-partisan manner ahead of the upcoming presidential elections. He emphasized his goal to remain neutral and avoid any appearance of bias or influence in the electoral process.

"I know some believe this work benefited one party over the other. My goal is to be neutral and not play a role one way or another, or even appear to be playing a role," Zuckerberg said. He noted that he does not plan to make similar contributions to political campaigns this election cycle.
