New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will move from a rent-stabilised Astoria apartment to Gracie Mansion in Manhattan. The move aims to balance personal safety with a sustained focus on the affordability agenda central to his campaign, while highlighting contrasts between Astoria living and the official residence.

New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani said that the family plans to leave their Astoria flat and shift into the official mayor’s residence, Gracie Mansion in Manhattan, after taking office in January, citing family safety and the need to stay fully focused on the "affordability agenda" that shaped the winning campaign.

Mamdani shared the decision in a detailed note on social media, writing, "My wife Rama and I have made the decision to move into Gracie Mansion in January." Mamdani stressed that the current Astoria home remains emotionally important and said the neighbourhood will "always live inside" both personal life and public work, even after the move.

The announcement follows months of criticism over Mamdani’s housing situation. The 34-year-old democratic socialist lives in a rent-stabilised, subsidised one-bedroom in Astoria, paying about $2,300, or roughly Rs 2,00,000 a month, despite earning $142,000 a year, around Rs 1,27,60,000, which drew sharp comments from former governor Andrew Cuomo.

Mamdani explained that security and policy work pushed the family towards Gracie Mansion. "This decision came down to our family's safety and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani wrote, adding emotional detail about leaving Astoria: "We will miss it all - the endless Adeni chai, the spirited conversations in Spanish, Arabic and every language in between, the aromas of seafood and shawarma drifting down the block."

The Astoria apartment, around 800 square feet, includes heat and hot water in the rent, as required under New York City law. The building, constructed in 1929, features a lift, which is still rare in that part of Queens, and offers a shared laundry room instead of a private washer and dryer inside the flat.

Gracie Mansion presents a stark contrast in space and setting. The official residence overlooks the East River from a veranda, includes a formal entertaining room with a large fireplace, and has a dining and sitting area decorated with wallpaper showing Parisian gardens, where mayors can eat meals prepared by a full-time Gracie chef.

Astoria is seen as a more affordable area that attracts young residents and families, while the Upper East Side, where Gracie Mansion stands, is known for major museums and popular bars. Security is far tighter around Gracie, with a high fence, cameras and police officers posted outside, and the New York Times has reported that this strong protection and ample gathering space are major reasons most New York mayors eventually choose to live there.

Mamdani, who centred the mayoral run on affordability and housing stability for New Yorkers, won last month’s election by a wide margin and is set to become the youngest New York mayor in more than a century, with the move to Gracie Mansion meant to align personal arrangements with the practical demands and safety expectations that come with the office.
