Zelenskyy's Comprehensive Peace Plan: Hope Amidst Global Diplomatic Efforts

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Friday that a "comprehensive plan" for ending the war with Russia was being drafted by Kyiv.

Currently, there are no ongoing public talks between Ukraine and Russia, and based on public statements by Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the two sides appear to be as far apart as ever regarding the terms of a potential peace settlement, as reported by Hindustan Times citing AFP.

Zelenskyy's Comprehensive Peace Plan - Here's What We Know

A major international summit was hosted by Zelenskyy in Switzerland earlier this month, aimed at rallying support for Ukraine's position, to which Russia was not invited. "It is very important for us to present a plan to end the war that will garner support from the majority of the world," stated Zelenskyy on Friday.

"This diplomatic path is the one we are working on," he emphasized at a press conference in Kyiv, alongside Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar. Over 90 countries sent leaders and senior officials to the two-day summit with Zelenskyy in Switzerland, with the vast majority agreeing to a final communique stressing the necessity of respecting Ukraine's "territorial integrity" in any settlement.

However, some key countries that attended, such as India, did not agree, and others, like Russia's ally China, boycotted the summit in protest over Moscow's exclusion. Ukraine has reiterated its stance that Russia must withdraw its troops from its internationally recognized territory, including Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014 before peace talks can commence.

Meanwhile, Putin, who initiated the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, demands that Ukraine effectively concede by evacuating further territory in its east and south. In Brussels on Thursday, Zelenskyy announced that a "detailed plan" would be put forward within a matter of months, as reported by Hindustan Times.

"We are running out of time," he remarked, highlighting the high casualty rate among soldiers and civilians. Russia's troops are reported to be slowly advancing on the battlefield, claiming to have seized another small frontline village on Friday.

Currently occupying approximately a fifth of Ukraine, Russia claimed in 2022 to have annexed four additional regions, none of which it fully controlled.

Ukraine relies on Western financial and military aid to resist the invading Russian forces, but its troops are disadvantaged, outnumbered, and fatigued after over two years of conflict.
