Community Bands Together to Capture Zebras Escaped Near Washington Highway

In an unexpected turn of events in a Washington neighborhood, a group of zebras became the center of attention after they escaped from their trailer. The incident occurred when the driver, transporting the zebras from Washington to Montana, stopped to secure the trailer near North Bend, about 30 miles southeast of Seattle. This led to a surprising sight for local residents and drivers as the zebras took the opportunity to flee.

Zebras Escaped Near Highway Corralled

According to Washington State Patrol Trooper Rick Johnson, three out of the four zebras were swiftly captured, leaving the whereabouts of the fourth initially uncertain. The escape prompted an immediate response from bystanders and authorities alike. Dan Barnett, a witness from North Bend, expressed his astonishment to KING-TV of Seattle upon seeing the zebras grazing by the roadside. In an effort to ensure their safety, Barnett and other drivers created a temporary barrier to prevent the animals from wandering onto the busy interstate.

The zebras, seemingly unfazed by their surroundings, ventured towards the town, passing by diners at a local restaurant. The situation took a turn when three of the escapees found themselves in Whitney Blomquist's backyard. "I called someone and was like, 'So I found the missing zebras, they're in my yard. Yeah – not sure what to do,'" Blomquist recounted. With the assistance of rodeo professionals, two zebras were captured in a neighboring yard, while the youngest member of the group was corralled shortly after.

Trooper Johnson took to the social platform X to share images of the loose zebras, remarking on the unusual nature of the incident for him and his colleagues. "This is a first for me and all @wastatepatrol troopers involved," he stated, adding that it was indeed a "Crazy!" experience.

The swift action taken by local residents and professionals ensured that most of the zebras were safely returned. The incident highlights the unpredictability of transporting animals and the importance of community vigilance and response in unexpected situations.
