Seven Miners Confirmed Dead, Dozens Missing After Zambia Mine Collapse

Seven miners have been confirmed dead and more than 20 others are missing after heavy rains caused landslides that buried them inside tunnels they had been digging illegally at a copper mine in Zambia.

Seven miners have been confirmed dead and more than 20 others are missing and presumed dead after heavy rains caused landslides that buried them inside tunnels they had been digging illegally at a copper mine in Zambia, according to police and local authorities.

Rescue Efforts Underway

Rescue efforts are currently underway, but no bodies have been retrieved since the landslides occurred late Thursday night. It is believed that many of the victims drowned.

Illegal Mining Operation

The miners were illegally digging for copper ore at the Seseli open-pit mine in the copper-belt city of Chingola, approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of the capital, Lusaka. The landslides occurred between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Thursday, and police have released the names or partial names of seven confirmed victims.

Authorities are unsure of the exact number of miners trapped in the tunnels, but Chingola District Commissioner Raphael Chumupi estimates that at least 36 were present. President Hakainde Hichilema expressed his condolences and gratitude to the rescuers and volunteers working tirelessly to reach those still trapped.

Illegal Artisanal Mining

Illegal artisanal mining is prevalent in Chingola, where the open pits are surrounded by enormous waste dumps composed of rock and earth excavated from the mines. Zambia, a southern African nation with a population of 20 million, ranks among the top 10 copper producers globally.

The mining industry in Zambia, while contributing significantly to the country's economy, also faces challenges related to safety and illegal mining practices. The tragic incident in Chingola highlights the need for stronger regulations and enforcement to prevent such tragedies in the future.
