Yunus: Constitutional Reforms Will Not Undermine Minority Protections

In a potentially important policy move, Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus underlined on Monday his commitment to protecting religious freedom and minorities' rights amidst the country's ongoing political transformation. Addressing concerns during a meeting with US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) Chair Stephen Schneck, Yunus stressed that any future constitutional revisions will uphold the concepts of equality and religious harmony.

Yunus emphasised on his official social media account, "We are striving hard to build religious harmony in the country." He reassured minorities that, despite of constitutional changes, they will have the same rights as the Muslim majority.

Genuine Reform or Tactical Move?

Yunus's comments come in the wake of criticism over rising violence against minorities following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League-led government in August last year. The country witnessed a spate of attacks on religious minorities, especially within the Hindu community, triggering both domestic and international concern.

When asked about the reform commissions and potential constitutional revisions, Yunus responded that the consensus-building commission is currently holding dialogues with political parties. He reiterated that any amendments being considered would not compromise the rights of minority communities.

"Minorities will continue to enjoy the same rights as the majority Muslim population," Yunus declared, aiming to dispel fears of institutional discrimination.

Commitment to Transparency

Addressing allegations of religiously motivated violence, Yunus invited global media to independently assess the situation on the ground. "We remain committed to transparency," he said, suggesting that international journalists are welcome to visit and see the reality firsthand.

The government, according to Yunus, remains focused on maintaining peace among communities and fostering an inclusive political dialogue, even as it faces scrutiny from various international human rights organizations.

Yunus to Remain at the Helm

Amid swirling reports about Muhammad Yunus contemplating resignation from his post, the interim government clarified that he will remain in charge. Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud, speaking after an impromptu advisory council meeting, confirmed Yunus's continued leadership.

"He didn't say he would step down," Mahmud clarified. "He said we face many obstacles in fulfilling our responsibilities, but we are overcoming them. He is definitely staying."

Mahmud also confirmed that none of the cabinet advisers are stepping down. "The responsibility entrusted to us is a significant one; we cannot abandon this duty," he said.

This assurance puts to rest speculation about instability within the transitional leadership, even as Yunus attempts to position himself as a figure of reform and reconciliation in a politically volatile Bangladesh.
