Xi, Pompeo reaffirm friendly relations between China and US in Beijing

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday, June 14, met Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to Beijing where they spoke over the North Korean problem, South China Sea and other issues. It was the third and concluding stop for Pompeo after Singapore and Seoul as part of the US's mobilisation of support for President Donald Trump's June 12 summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.

During his meeting with Pompeo, President Xi said China and the US share broad common interests and that they shoulder important responsibilities to safeguard global peace and stability and promote development. He also stressed the idea of respecting each other's interests and concerns.

Xi hoped that the US will carefully tackle issues like Taiwan and trade to prevent the relations between the two countries get soured and Pompeo concurred saying Washington attached great significance to its relation with Beijing.

Pompeo latter tweeted thanking the Chinese president for the meeting and said both the countries were committed towards complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and work towards durable peace in the region.

Pompeo also mentioned about his "productive meeting" with China's Politburo member Yang and Foreign Minister Wang Yi during his visit to Beijing. He spoke to the media jointly with Yi.

Before his visit to Beijing, Pompeo met South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Seoul and briefed him about Trump's meeting with Kim.
