In India, a high-stakes competition is unfolding among states to lead in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, technology, and infrastructure development.
As World EV Day approaches, a closer look reveals which states are driving the EV revolution and their progress in 2024.

Uttar Pradesh: Leading the Charge
Uttar Pradesh stands out with over 200,000 electric vehicles registered, making it the top state for EV adoption. The majority of these are three-wheelers, reflecting the state's diverse transportation needs. The UP government's proactive policies and the extension of the Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy until 2027 have significantly boosted EV adoption. The breakdown of EV sales in Uttar Pradesh is:
- Two-wheelers: Over 38,000
- Three-wheelers: Over 160,000
- Four-wheelers: Over 2,800
Maharashtra: A Close Contender
Maharashtra follows closely with more than 126,000 EVs on the roads. The state's favourable policies and emerging role as an EV manufacturing hub have attracted major companies like Tata Motors and Mahindra Electric. The EV sales in Maharashtra are distributed as follows:
- Two-wheelers: Over 100,000
- Three-wheelers: Over 8,500
- Four-wheelers: Over 8,000
Karnataka: Accelerating Forward
In Karnataka, over 99,000 EVs have been sold in 2024, propelled by the Karnataka Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy. Bengaluru, the state's capital, has become a major EV adopter due to its tech-savvy population. The EV sales breakdown in Karnataka is:
- Two-wheelers: Over 86,000
- Three-wheelers: Over 4,800
- Four-wheelers: Over 6,800
Tamil Nadu: Manufacturing and Adoption
Tamil Nadu has sold nearly 73,900 electric vehicles and is not only a major promoter of EV adoption but also a leader in EV manufacturing. The state's dual focus on usage and production has strengthened its position in the EV landscape. The breakdown in Tamil Nadu is:
- Two-wheelers: Over 64,000
- Three-wheelers: Over 4,200
- Four-wheelers: Over 4,600
Bihar: Emerging Player
Bihar has sold over 65,000 EVs in 2024, with a significant number being three-wheelers. The sales distribution in Bihar is:
- Two-wheelers: Over 10,900
- Three-wheelers: Over 54,000
- Four-wheelers: Over 500
Top EV Penetration by State
In terms of EV penetration relative to vehicle sales, Goa leads with EVs accounting for 14% of all vehicle sales. Tripura follows with 13.73%, Chandigarh at 13.50%, Delhi at 10.72%, and Assam at 9.93%.
Charging Infrastructure: Who's Leading?
Maharashtra also excels in EV infrastructure, boasting 3,079 charging stations. Delhi comes in second with 1,886 stations, followed by Karnataka with 1,081. These numbers reflect the ongoing commitment to support the growing number of electric vehicles across India.
