World EV Day: Busting Top Myths About Electric Vehicles You Need To Know

As World EV Day unfolds on September 9, it's an ideal moment to tackle some common myths and misconceptions about electric vehicles (EVs). Despite growing interest, many potential buyers remain hesitant.

A recent survey by Carsales revealed that only 34% of Australians are considering an EV purchase, a drop from previous years. Notably, Gen Z, known for their environmental awareness, is the least likely group to believe they'll be driving an EV by 2035.

Should You Buy an EV?

If you have off-street parking and access to home charging, an EV could be a great fit for you-provided you choose a model that suits your lifestyle. While options for Utes and off-road vehicles are still limited, there are plenty of compelling EVs in categories like SUVs, hatchbacks, and sedans. These vehicles offer advanced technology and never require refueling.

Charging on the Go

One concern is charging while on the road. While many EVs can add substantial range in 15 to 20 minutes with ultra-rapid chargers, planning your route to include these stops is essential. With some adjustments and planning, EVs are indeed capable of long-distance travel, as demonstrated by our extensive road trips.

Dispelling Common EV Myths

1. Battery Life Concerns: A prevalent myth is that EV batteries need replacement soon after their warranty expires (usually eight years). However, like traditional engines, EV batteries are designed to last the vehicle's lifetime. Although they may lose some capacity over time, most EV batteries are expected to outlast the vehicle itself.

2. Resale Value Issues: It's also believed that EVs are hard to sell. While values have fluctuated, partly due to price reductions on new EVs and concerns about battery life, this trend may not persist. Historically, hybrids faced similar issues but are now in high demand. EVs still hold significant value in the used car market.

3. Limited Range: Another myth is that EVs can only travel short distances. Given that the average Australian commute is under 40 km, even the smallest EVs can cover a full week of driving without daily recharging. Modern EVs now offer ranges between 400-600 km, making them competitive with traditional vehicles for longer trips.
