Tragic Quarry Accident in Massachusetts Claims Worker's Life

A worker died on Thursday morning after a rock ledge collapsed onto an excavator at a Massachusetts quarry. The incident buried the machine under rocks and boulders. Firefighters and rescue teams responded to the scene, using camera equipment to assess the situation. They found no signs of life, according to Sterling fire officials, located about 40 miles west of Boston.

Quarry Worker Killed in Collapse

The worker was declared dead at 8:39 a.m., but their identity has not been released. The US Department of Labour Mine Safety and Health Administration is inspecting the site to determine if it is safe to proceed with retrieval efforts, local fire officials said.

Quarry Operations Halted

The Sterling Fire Department posted online that multiple agencies were working at the quarry site on Chocksett Road. "Please avoid the area. There is no safety threat to the public," the department stated. Onyx Corporation, which operates the quarry, announced online that all its locations would be closed from Thursday through the weekend, resuming business on Monday.

A representative reached at a business number associated with the quarry said, "I have nothing at this time," when contacted by The Associated Press. An email seeking further information was sent to the company.

Company Background

Onyx Corporation announced its new quarry location on Chocksett Road in February 2018. "Whether you be a small landscaper or heavy civil contractor, we have the locations and expertise to provide you with all your sand or aggregate needs," the company posted online at that time.

In January, Onyx Corporation shared that it transforms large rocks into aggregate materials used for roads, drainage systems, retaining walls, and other infrastructure projects.

The tragic incident has prompted an investigation by federal authorities to ensure safety before any further actions are taken at the site. The community has been advised to stay clear of the area while rescue and inspection operations continue.
