Woman Files Lawsuit Against Former Grammy Awards CEO Neil Portnow for Sexual Assault
A woman has filed a lawsuit against former Grammy Awards CEO Neil Portnow, accusing him of a 2018 sexual assault. The lawsuit also includes allegations of negligence by the Recording Academy.
In a recent development, former Grammy Awards CEO Neil Portnow faces accusations of sexual assault in 2018. The lawsuit has been filed by an anonymous woman who also accuses the Recording Academy of negligence for not taking appropriate action on her complaint lodged in late 2018. This case was filed under the Adult Survivors Act at the state Supreme Court in Manhattan.

The plaintiff is described as an internationally known musician who had once performed at Carnegie Hall. She alleges that she met Portnow early in 2018 and later arranged to interview him at his hotel room in New York City. During this meeting, she claims that he gave her a drink which caused her to intermittently lose consciousness and then proceeded to sexually assault her. These allegations have been vehemently denied by a spokesperson for Portnow, labeling them as "completely false". The spokesperson further suggested that these accusations were motivated by Mr.Portnow's refusal to comply with the plaintiff's demands for money and assistance in obtaining a residence visa.
Recording Academy’s Response
The woman states that she reached out to the Recording Academy about Portnow's alleged misconduct towards the end of 2018. However, according to her claim, no substantial action was taken against him by the academy. In response to this lawsuit, The Recording Academy stated "We continue to believe the claims are without merit and intend vigorously defend our organization against this lawsuit."
Allegations Surfaced After Portnow’s Departure
Notably, these allegations first came into public view only after Neil Portnow stepped down from his position as CEO of Grammy Awards back in 2020. His successor Deborah Dugan had a short stint before being ousted but managed to bring attention towards these accusations during her filing of complaint against The Recording Academy.
In conclusion, this lawsuit against former Grammy Awards CEO Neil Portnow and the Recording Academy brings to light serious allegations of sexual assault and negligence. The case, filed under the Adult Survivors Act, is a reflection of the ongoing struggle for justice by survivors of sexual assault. It also raises questions about how institutions like the Recording Academy respond to such accusations. As this case progresses, it will be crucial to observe how these entities defend themselves in court and whether they can maintain their credibility in the face of such grave allegations.
