Tensions in the Middle East have escalated to a boiling point following a series of violent incidents, including airstrikes, assassinations, and military mobilizations.

These developments have set the stage for potential widespread conflict. It was reported by Axios that US Central Command's General Michael Kurilla arrived in the Middle East on Saturday amid Israel's heightened state of alert for a possible Iranian attack.

The heightened alert follows the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Smoke was seen rising after an Israeli air raid on the town of Shamaa in southern Lebanon on August 1, 2024, amid ongoing cross-border clashes between Israeli troops and Hezbollah fighters.

This visit, although planned before the recent surge in hostilities, is viewed as a crucial effort to mobilize international and regional support similar to the coalition that defended Israel in April. The death of Haniyeh was attributed to a short-range projectile, and Iran's Revolutionary Guard accused Israel, supported by the US, of orchestrating the attack.

The Guard's statement emphasized that the action was designed and carried out by the Zionist regime with US support. It further warned that the "warmongering and terrorist Zionist regime" would receive harsh punishment at an appropriate time, place, and capacity. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement in Haniyeh's killing.

Calls for retaliation have been spurred by this incident, with Iran and its proxies, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, vowing to respond. The threat of Iranian retaliation prompted the US to bolster its military presence in the region. The Pentagon announced the deployment of a fighter jet squadron and the maintenance of an aircraft carrier in the Middle East.

Both the US and British governments have advised their citizens to leave Lebanon, anticipating possible escalations. Meanwhile, an Israeli delegation led by Mossad Chief David Barnea made a brief visit to Cairo for discussions with Egyptian intelligence officials. This visit follows US President Joe Biden's urging of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to consider a cease-fire, despite the complexities added by the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

Even as efforts for a cease-fire in Gaza continue, Israeli airstrikes in the West Bank resulted in the deaths of nine Palestinian militants on Saturday. The Israeli army reported that its forces targeted a vehicle outside Tulkarem, killing five occupants identified by Hamas as militants.

Later, four more militants were killed after allegedly opening fire on Israeli troops. Over 590 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in the West Bank since the war between Israel and Hamas reignited in Gaza in October. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has warned that Iran and Hezbollah might attack Israel within the next 24 to 48 hours. This warning was reported by Axios on Monday, raising fears of a regional war in the Middle East.

Iran and Hezbollah have pledged to retaliate for the killing of top leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah last week. According to three unnamed sources quoted by Axios, Blinken informed his G7 counterparts in a conference call that Iran and Hezbollah could launch an attack against Israel as early as Monday.

Blinken reportedly stressed that the US believes both Iran and Hezbollah will retaliate, though Washington is uncertain about the exact timing or form of the attacks. He emphasized that the US hopes to halt the escalation by persuading Iran and Hezbollah to limit their attacks and restrain any Israeli response. Blinken requested the other foreign ministers to join the effort by applying diplomatic pressure on the involved parties.

The G7, comprising Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom, issued a statement on Monday expressing deep concern over the heightened tension in the Middle East. The statement called for restraint on all sides, insisting that no country or nation stands to gain from further escalation.

In response to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on July 31, the US deployed additional military forces to the Middle East, insisting that the deployment was defensive. US Central Command chief General Michael Kurilla is reportedly set to arrive in Israel on Monday to finalize preparations with the Israeli army ahead of a possible attack, as reported by Axios.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant issued a warning, stating that if they dare to attack us, they will pay a heavy price. The nearly 10-month-old war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas has led to regular low-level hostilities between Israel and Iran and Hezbollah, as well as other groups in the region aligned with Tehran. While it is widely thought that neither side is ready for an all-out war, the heightened tensions mean the risk of a conflagration is high.

Several countries have advised their citizens to immediately leave Lebanon following warnings from the US and many European governments. Japan, Saudi Arabia, and France are among the latest to urge their citizens to leave the country while commercial flights are still operating. The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs urgently asked its nationals to avoid travelling to Lebanon and suggested those already in the country leave as soon as possible in a highly volatile security context.
