Why ‘THEY'RE EATING THE DOGS’ Is Trending On X? Trump’s Shocking Claim Unleashes Meme Fest
Former President Donald Trump has ignited a social media frenzy after making baseless claims during the first 2024 presidential debate, implying that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, are responsible for stealing and eating pets. Although Trump did not directly name Haitians, his remarks referenced unsubstantiated rumors that Haitian immigrants are killing animals for food.
The debate initially focused on economic issues, but Trump pivoted to the topic of immigration, alleging that "people are eating the pets" in Springfield, Ohio. "In Springfield, they're eating the dogs, the people that came in, they're eating the cats ... they're eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is what's happening in our country, and it's a shame," Trump said.

These statements echo rumors that have circulated locally but have no basis in fact. Springfield's police department confirmed they have received no reports of such incidents. During the debate, ABC News moderator David Muir corrected Trump, stating that Springfield's city manager had found no credible evidence to support these claims. Nevertheless, Trump maintained, "I've seen people on television saying 'my dog was taken and used for food.'"
Kamala Harris, who was also present during the debate, hit back, calling Trump's comments "extreme."
Why 'They're Eating the Dogs' Is Trending On X?
Trump's remarks quickly went viral, with many users on X (formerly Twitter) sharing and reacting to the statement.
The topic began trending as both critics and supporters weighed in. Memes and jokes flooded the platform, some mocking Trump's claims, while others shared disbelief at the baseless narrative.
Adding to the online uproar, Trump had earlier shared an AI-generated photo of himself surrounded by kittens and ducks, which further fueled the conversation.
Critics called out Trump's continued use of inflammatory rhetoric, with some accusing him of stoking xenophobia and fear-mongering.
Meanwhile, his defenders either downplayed the comments as humor or suggested that the former president was simply highlighting broader concerns about immigration.
Misinformation on the Rise
This incident underscores the growing trend of misinformation in political discourse. While local officials and the media have debunked the claims, Trump's narrative persists online, creating confusion and tension. As the 2024 presidential race heats up, such comments are likely to remain a contentious point in debates and discussions.
