Why Is Friday The 13th Considered Unlucky and Linked To Misfortune In Western Culture?

In Western culture, Friday the 13th is often linked to bad luck and misfortune and is considered an inauspicious day. Similar to encountering a black cat or breaking a mirror, the belief in a day associated with bad luck is ingrained, even if its origins remain elusive for believers.

Friday the 13th can occur at least once a year and potentially up to three times within the same year. There's a term to capture this unfounded fear of the date: paraskevidekatriaphobia - a specific manifestation of triskaidekaphobia, the fear of the number 13.

Why Is Friday The 13th Considered Unlucky and Linked To Misfortune In Western Culture?

Like numerous superstitions that have evolved over time and across various cultures, tracing the exact origins of Friday the 13th is a difficult task. However, what we can ascertain is that both Friday and the number 13 have carried an unfortunate connotation in specific cultures throughout history.

Charles Panati, in his book 'Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things' connects the notion of this ill-fated day to Norse mythology. According to this mythology, Loki, the god of mischief, disrupted a banquet in Valhalla, resulting in 13 gods present. In a deceitful act orchestrated by Loki, the blind god Hodr was manipulated into fatally shooting his brother Balder, the god of light, joy, and goodness, using a mistletoe-tipped arrow during this event.

The number 13 is symbolic of rebellion and lawlessness in the Bible. The Last Supper had 13 individuals present, encompassing Jesus and his 12 disciples. The 13th attendee, Judas Iscariot, was the betrayer of Jesus. This link has established the superstition that having 13 guests seated at a table brings ill fortune.

Prior to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, Adam and Eve's consumption of the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge took place on a Friday. Additionally, Friday is associated with the day when Cain killed his brother Abel, the destruction of the Temple of Solomon, and the sailing of Noah's ark during the Great Flood, as reported by CNN.

According to an alternative account, the day's unfortunate reputation dates back to 1307, a Friday the 13th, when the French king commanded the arrest of numerous Knights Templar in France, resulting in the execution of a majority of them.

Several unfortunate events in history took place on the 13th:

  • On September 13, 1940: The German bombing of Buckingham Palace occurred.
  • On March 13, 1964: The murder of Kitty Genovese transpired in Queens, New York.
  • On November 13, 1970: 3 lakh in Bangladesh was killed by a cyclone.
  • On October 13, 1972: The disappearance of a Chilean Air Force plane in the Andes transpired.
  • On September 13, 1996: Rapper Tupac Shakur passed away.
  • On January 13, 2012: The Costa Concordia cruise ship crashed off the coast of Italy, resulting in the loss of 30 lives.

However, the superstitious belief has been popularised by books, movies and TV shows. Popular among them is horror film series 'Friday - The 13th'.
