Why Hasn't Obama Endorsed Kamala Harris? Explained
Many prominent figures in Democratic politics swiftly showed their support for Vice President Kamala Harris, on Sunday.
However, one major Democratic figure notably withheld his endorsement: former President Barack Obama.

Obama Not Onboard With Harris: Here are the reasons
Despite a heartfelt tribute to President Joe Biden posted on Medium shortly after Biden's withdrawal from the 2024 race, Obama did not mention Harris, fueling speculation and some criticism. In his tribute, Obama praised Biden as one of America's most impactful presidents and a close friend, reflecting on their partnership since Biden was selected as his running mate in 2008, as reported by Deccan Herald.
Obama described Biden as a leader with experience and integrity, emphasizing that he believes the Democratic Party will find a strong nominee moving forward. "We will be navigating uncharted waters in the days ahead," Obama wrote, expressing confidence in the party's ability to choose an outstanding candidate.
The omission of Harris in Obama's tribute has been interpreted by some as a slight. However, those close to Obama suggest that his lack of endorsement should not be seen as a negative gesture. Obama, who has aimed to maintain a position as an impartial elder statesman, has historically refrained from intervening too early in Democratic primaries, as reported by the Deccan Herald.
Four years ago, he similarly avoided endorsing a candidate before the end of the primaries, preferring not to influence the process prematurely. Obama's reluctance to endorse Harris immediately is also seen as a strategic move. Endorsing too early could be perceived as an attempt to coronate Harris rather than allowing a fair and thorough selection process, as per US media reports.
Instead, Obama intends to focus on uniting the party once a nominee is chosen, aligning with his goal of fostering party cohesion without rushing decisions. Personal dynamics also play a role. Biden, known for his pride, has not forgotten Obama's support for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 primaries or his suggestion that Biden consider not running in 2020. Despite these tensions, Obama's approach remains one of careful consideration, ensuring that his actions do not inadvertently exacerbate any existing party rifts.
Overall, Obama's decision to remain neutral for now reflects his broader strategy of supporting party unity and allowing the nomination process to unfold organically. As the Democratic Party moves forward, his role will likely shift to one of reconciliation and support for the chosen candidate.
