Who is Ranjani Srinivasan? Indian Student Self-Deports After US Revokes Visa Over Alleged Hamas Support
The US Department of Homeland Security has announced that Ranjani Srinivasan, an Indian doctoral student at Columbia University, has voluntarily left the United States after her visa was revoked for allegedly supporting Hamas.
Srinivasan, a PhD student in Urban Planning, entered the US on an F-1 student visa. The Department of State revoked her visa on March 5, 2025, citing security concerns related to her alleged involvement in activities supporting Hamas, which is designated as a terrorist organization. On March 11, 2025, she self-deported using the CBP Home App, and officials confirmed obtaining video footage of her departure.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem addressed the situation, stating that living and studying in the US on a visa is a privilege that should be revoked if an individual supports violence and terrorism. She reiterated that such individuals should not be allowed to stay in the country.
Srinivasan's academic background is extensive, with a focus on urban planning and development. According to her bio on NYU Wagner's official website, she holds an M.Phil in Urban Planning from Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (GSAPP). She also earned a Master's in Design from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) from CEPT University.
Her research primarily revolves around the changing dynamics of land-labor relations in India's peri-urban areas. Her academic interests include the political economy of development, land politics, and labor sociology.
The case has drawn attention amid increasing scrutiny of individuals and organizations allegedly supporting extremist groups in the US. The Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies have been cracking down on activities deemed as threats to national security.
Srinivasan's self-deportation follows a broader trend of visa revocations for individuals accused of supporting extremist ideologies. The US government has emphasized its commitment to national security and maintaining strict visa regulations to prevent the entry and stay of those it considers a threat.
