Who Is Nikesh Arora, The Only Indian-American In The Top 10 Highest-Paid CEOs In The US?

While a remarkable number of Indian-origin executives have been noted in Silicon Valley, only one Indian-American has been included among the top 10 highest-paid CEOs in the US. Interestingly, it is not Sundar Pichai or Satya Nadella.

Nikesh Arora, serving as CEO and chairman of Palo Alto Networks, has been ranked as the 10th highest-earning CEO in the United States, as reported by C-Suite Comp, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Who Is Nikesh Arora?

The list of the highest-paid CEOs in the US was released on Monday by the data analytics firm. Two different lists were published, one based on "total compensation granted" in 2023 and the other on "compensation actually paid." Neither Sundar Pichai, the Indian-American CEO of Google, nor Satya Nadella of Microsoft made it to either list, despite Microsoft's stellar performance due to its involvement with OpenAI, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Conversely, Nikesh Arora of Palo Alto Networks was featured on both lists. He ranked fourth in the "Highest earning CEOs in the US by total compensation granted in 2023" category, with earnings of $151.4 million. Arora also placed 10th in the "Highest earning CEOs in the US by compensation actually paid in 2023," receiving an annual compensation of $266.4 million.

Topping the list was Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who earned a staggering $1.4 billion in 2023. Alexander Karp of Palantir Technologies was the only other executive to surpass the $1 billion mark.

The highest-paid CEOs in the US by 'compensation actually paid' in 2023 included:

  • Elon Musk, Tesla: $1.4 billion
  • Alexander Karp, Palantir Technologies: $1.1 billion
  • Hock Tan, Broadcom: $767.7 million
  • Brian Armstrong, Coinbase Global: $680.9 million
  • Safra Catz, Oracle: $304.1 million
  • Brian Chesky, Airbnb: $303.5 million
  • Jon Winkelried, TPG: $295.1 million
  • Jeff Green, Trade Desk: $291.7 million
  • Adam Foroughi, AppLovin: $271.3 million

Nikesh Arora assumed the role of CEO of Palo Alto Networks in 2018. His distinguished career has included significant positions at Google and SoftBank Group. Arora, now 56, was born to an Indian Air Force officer and completed his schooling at Air Force Public School in Delhi, as reported by Hindustan Times.

He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (now IIT-BHU). He also holds an MBA from Northeastern University and an MSc from Boston College. Arora spent a decade at Google in senior leadership roles before resigning in 2014 to join SoftBank Group as its president and chief operating officer, as per media reports.
