Who Is Narges Mohammadi? Iran's Nobel Laureate Granted Rare Prison Leave

Narges Mohammadi, a renowned advocate for democracy and women's rights in Iran, has been granted a temporary leave from Evin prison, where she has been held for the majority the past twenty years.

Recognized globally for her relentless struggle against women's oppression and unyielding dedication to human rights, Mohammadi was honored with the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize. Despite her accolades she has faced harsh penalties, serving sentences totaling over 30 years for charges including national security violations and disseminating anti-government messages.

Following a surgical procedure in November to excise part of her lower right leg bone due to a lesion suspected of being cancerous, Iranian authorities have allowed Mohammadi a 21-day leave from imprisonment to recuperate. This decision comes amid urgent pleas from her family and legal representatives for a three-month hiatus to ensure adequate recovery. Unfortunately, the brief respite has been critiqued as significantly insufficient by her family, who argue that more time is essential for her healing.

The Narges Foundation, spearheaded by Mohammadi's relatives, has voiced concern over her health, stating that she requires more than a decade's worth of specialized medical attention in a secure and clean setting, a basic human right. Medical experts consulted by the foundation have recommended a minimum of three months' recovery time. Currently, Mohammadi is reported to be unable to walk and was transported home in an ambulance, the cost of which she had to bear without any financial help from the state.

Despite the Iranian prosecutor's decision to suspend Mohammadi's sentence temporarily, her family deems the action as "too little, too late." Her recent surgery was aimed at investigating a lesion on her bone, which doctors fear may be cancerous. Adding to the gravity of her health concerns, she has experienced a heart attack in 2021, and recent medical examinations suggest the need for further tests, including angiography on one of her heart arteries, to address her progressing arthritis and disc disease.
