Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes began serving her 11-year sentence for defrauding investors in a Texas prison on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old entrepreneur was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison last November after she was convicted on multiple charges of defrauding investors while running the now-defunct startup.

Additionally, a US federal court ordered Elizabeth Homles to pay $452 million with her former business partner Ramesh Sunny Balwani to all the high-profile investors of their company.

"We can confirm Elizabeth Holmes has arrived at the Federal Prison Camp (FPC) Bryan in Bryan, Texas, and is in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons," the authority said in a brief statement.

Elizabeth Holmes is a Stanford University drop-out who founded Theranos, a health-tech company.

The disgraced biotech star has claimed her start-up is developing an easy-to-use test kit that could carry out a wide range of medical diagnostics with just a few drops of blood.

Based on these claims, Homes was able to raise millions of dollars in capital from venture capitalists and private investors.

Later, Holmes became a tech celebrity, bagging investments from the world's richest persons and top politicians, including media baron Rupert Murdoch, Oracle founder Larry Ellison, and pharmacy chain Walgreens.

Theranos also shot to fame after notable figures became its board of directors, including former top US government officials Henry Kissinger, George Shultz, and Jim Mattis.

But Theranos fame nosedived after a Wall Street Journal investigation into the validity of the tests.

The Wall Street Journal alleged that there are gaps in management and strategies at Theranos and accused the company of rigging tests to produce better results for the Edison machines.

Holmes is reportedly married to Billy Evans had a child shortly before her trial and has had a second since her conviction.
